Gulf Coast Economics Teaching Conference

Gulf Coast Economics Teaching Conference

South-Western, a part of Cengage Learning, co-hosts the Gulf Coast Economics Teaching Conference each year. The goal of this academic conference is to offer economics instructors a forum for sharing and learning the latest in teaching strategies and techniques for the economics classroom. While there are large amounts of resources available to professors such as videos, instructor’s resource CD’s, the Internet, instructor’s manuals and the like, the Economics Product Team wanted to create a professional association where professors could interact with fellow colleagues.

Conference attendees find this event to be particularly beneficial since everyone has an opportunity to interact, share ideas, share concerns, best practices, and chat with the keynote speakers. One of the keynote speakers, N. Gregory Mankiw, who is a Cengage Learning economics textbook author and former Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors, ‘cengages’ customers since they see that he is also an economics instructor just like them and faces many of the same challenges.

Delmar Nursing Forums

Delmar’s Nursing Forums create an environment in which nurse educators from around the region can come together and collaborate about emerging trends, best practices and new ideas. Instructors rarely get a chance to network with colleagues in their own department let alone with colleagues from different programs, so it is a welcome chance for them to communicate and gather ideas from our authors and speakers and from each other. The forums also provide Delmar’s editorial and marketing teams with the opportunity to connect with their customers to assess their needs as well as create meaningful and innovative solutions.

In 2008, we look forward to expanding the Forums into a series by adding Medical Assisting to the line-up --- providing us with a new way to communicate our commitment to the field and to create the most meaningful and innovative solutions for our customers on the market today.

South-Western’s Blue Sky Workshops

Over the past three years, Blue Sky workshops enabled the accounting team to get closer to their customers than ever before, as well as uncover innovative solutions to age-old problems. Key customers from around the country joined the authors and publishing team in the South-Western offices and re-imagined introductory accounting pedagogy. The result was a customer-driven revision of the team’s flagship brand of Warren/Reeve/Duchac Accounting.

Course Technology’s Annual National Conference

For the past 12 years, Course Technology has brought together hundreds of educators and administrators for its Annual National Conference. This three-day conference, which is the premier industry event for computer technology educators, provides hands-on training, discussions on the latest industry trends, teaching and courseware solutions, as well as an opportunity to network with colleagues, authors, and Course Technology staff.

In 2007, more than 500 professors, administrators, and teachers from universities, community colleges, career and high schools from across the country attended the sold-out event.

Each year, the Conference features more than 50 educational sessions, hands-on labs, keynote presentations, an exhibit hall showcasing the latest Course Technology solutions, as well as those of the show’s sponsors, and a “special event” highlighting local food, entertainment, and fun.

Hands-on labs provide an introduction and training on the latest Microsoft applications, web and graphic design applications, security and privacy, assessment, certification, and much more. Sessions feature relevant topics including transforming one’s course, engaging students, enhancing the learning environment, and incorporating assessment into the classroom.

Many attendees have been coming to the Conference since its inaugural year and attendees rave about the amount of training and discussion that takes place over the three days. The Conference is a tradition of its own (even the paper airplanes that kick off the beginning of the event each year) and is an ideal way for us to support our customers and promote a dialogue on the impact of new information technologies on today’s student and tomorrow’s professional.

“This was the best conference I've ever attended (in over 30 years of teaching). The CT staff and presenters were approachable and helpful, and the sessions were well planned and executed. Thank you for a wonderful learning opportunity!”

NetLearning 2007 User Convention

NetLearning is committed to customer-centric communication strategies, creating collaborative environments and connecting learners, educators, and colleagues through rich user experiences, helping to customize personal relationships with our products, services, and staff to enhance their communities of practice. Our key forum for bringing customers to the center of engagement is the annual NetLearning User Convention.

Last year’s convention, “Soar to New Heights,” attracted over 190 clients to the Westin Westminster in beautiful state of Colorado, featuring over 70 sessions including peer-to-peer presentations, 1:1 computer labs and best-practices sessions with NetLearning staff, courseware exhibits, and a variety of fun-filled evening events where the clients relaxed, networked with peers and had a little fun in the process. Presentations, photos, and general feedback from the event were shared via NetNotes, NetLearning’s online message board where we continually roll feedback from our users’ experiences into our products and services.

Planning the event is a year-round endeavor, filled with site research, client surveys, and the general creative development of themes, activities, and innovative approaches to enhancing the complete customer experience. Over 97% of our clients gave the User Convention an above average rating and would therefore recommend it to a colleague for next year. Many of our clients walked away with new NetLearning knowledge, more ways to use the system within their facility, and even some new friends. It was a great convention and we can’t wait for the 2008 event.

“I really enjoy working with NetLearning because I have always found them to be a group of folks who are open to suggestions and genuinely listen to their customers. ”
Susan Powell, Education Coordinator, Gwinnett Medical Center
