The demo version is incompatible with Office97.

When naming your data file, be sure to only use letters and numbers, no special characters.
This is only an issue with Statplus v1.

I am receiving various Visual Basic errors when running the Stat Plus Add-Ins under Office 97.

Stats97.xla will not run on certain configurations of Excel `97: those
with international versions of Win`95 OS and those with slightly older
versions of Excel `97. Both give Visual Basic errors.
Please download an updated version, which should solve most of your errors.

I am having trouble installing my StatPlus Add-in Disk by Berk and Carey under an Office 95/97 environment.

Updated files can be downloaded from:

Download (if you have Internet Explorer, right click on the file(s), and choose "Copy to Folder") and launch the file. Follow the onscreen instructions to install.

Once the files have been installed:

Open Excel Program...click on Tools from menu bar...select Add-Ins from drop-down menu...find "berk" folder...double click either Stats95.xls or Stats97.xls (depends on your system) to add to your Add-Ins screen...then click OK. Your menu bar will now show the Stats options.

If you don’t want to install the Stats Add-In each time you launch Excel, simply open the Stats file as if you would any other file in Excel. It will then be installed for the session of Excel only.

The StatPlus Frequency Table output is incorrect when used with relative
references for the Data or By variables rather than range names. An updated
version of the file which creates the frequency table is available for
download. To install the bug fix, do the following:

1) Exit Excel
2) Download the FreqTab.spa and copy it to the folder containing the
StatPlus add-in files, replacing the previous version of FreqTab.spa
3) Restart Excel

When I launch @Risk4, a dialog window with "Could not initialize the @Risk Model application" message popped up.

There are several possible reasons this error could occur.

@RISK-Model is not registered properly with your computer. In @RISK 4.0.4 and higher, this registration should happen automatically. In @RISK 4.0.3 and earlier, you can manually register @RISK-Model, by going to the Run item on the Start Bar. Type in "C:\DTOOLS\RISK4\RskModel.exe /REGSERVER" (where C:\DTOOLS\RISK4 is the directory where you installed @RISK – you’ll need to change that accordingly, if it is not) and click OK.
There is a missing support file. The recommended cure for this is the reinstallation of @RISK.
You still have a copy of @RISK running from a previous session. Make sure @RISK is shut down completely before launching it again.
Your system is low on memory or resources.

It is also recommend that you download the upgrade at www.palisade.com

What are the limitations of the student version?

@RISK: 1 worksheet, limited to 4000 cells (40 columns by 100 rows)
The 100 rows by 40 columns must occupy rows numbered 1 to 100
and columns lettered A to AO. You cannot do anything in cell A101 or any
cell outside that range.

PrecisionTree: 50 nodes in decision tree or influence diagram

BestFit: limit to 200 point data set

TopRank: 1 worksheet, limited to 4000 cells (40 columns by 100 rows)

RISKview: no limit

I have the new Decision Tools suite. Installation went fine. When I try to launch any of the add-ins from my ...I get the error "This wkbk contains a type of macro (excel 4.0 macro) that cannot be disabled or signed. Therefore it cannot be opened under high security levels.

Go to Tools... Macros... Security.
Change the security to Medium.
Exit Excel.
Relaunch Decision Tools from the Start Menu and choose to Enable Macros, repeatedly if necessary until all macros are added.

Please note: This is a lower security setting, be cautious of all macros you enable in your Office products.

I’m having launch errors with Decision Tools products.

If you have Adobe Acrobat, please remove the PDFwriter.xla from your XLStart folder.

I can’t get the Premium Solver from Frontline Systems to install. I keep getting a "File Not Found" error.

How do I authorize my Decision Tools Suite after 30 days?

You are given the option to authorize the product within 30 days of installation.
Simply choose "via Web" to be taken to the Palisade web site. You can manually access the Palisade web site by going to:

I’ve installed the Decision Tools to my network server, but receive a "Failed to Create Empty Document" when I launch the Authorization Monitor. If I launch one of the Decision Tools components, I don’t have the option to Authorize the product either.

The "Failed to create empty document" message you are getting could be
caused by having, a different version of the file Grid32.ocx from the
version installed by Palisade.

The version installed by Palisade is 4.0.29.8. In at least one instance the
Failed to create empty document message occurred on a system where a later
version of Grid32.ocx was installed.

Check the version of Grid32.ocx on the machine from which you are
attempting to launch the Authorization Monitor. If the file version is not
4.0.29.8, then try the following workaround:

1. Rename your version of Grid32.ocx to Grid32.NEWER.

2. Now you should not have any file at all on the server that is
named Grid32.ocx. (Check to make sure, and then rename any other copies of
Grid32.ocx with a different extension.)

3. Uninstall any parts of the @RISK installation that you have done
so far. You should be able to do this by :

Clicking the Windows Start button
Choose Settings>Control Panel
Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight the list item for @RISK and click the Add/Remove
button. You may have to remove the entire The Decision Tools suite.

4. Reinstall @RISK as directed in the Network ReadMe. The installer
should ignore the renamed versions, and write a totally new Grid32.ocx to
your drive, which will be the Palisade version.

5. See whether you are now allowed to launch the Authorization
monitor at the appropriate point during the instructions given in the second
section of the Network ReadMe, titled "Running the Authorization Monitor.

The problem with the Grid32.ocx version was previously reported as a bug,
and will be fixed in a later release.

I can’t find Solvertable.

Remove it from the Tools... Addins section of Excel.
Then, delete your current solvertable. Go to Start... Find. Files and Folders. Do a search for "solvertable". Delete all instances of it.

I’m receiving an Authorization Error when I go to register my product. The installation seemed to be successful.

Authorization errors can occur of .key files become corrupt. A complete uninstall/reinstall usually solves the problem.

First, go to Add/Remove Programs from Windows Control Panel, and remove "The Decision Tools".
Then, go to Start... Find. Do a search on "dtools".
Delete any remnants of the Decision Tools folder (by default, it’s C:\Dtools)
Also delete the dtools.ini file (usually in C:\Windows).

Then, reinstall the Decision Tools from your CD and try to authorize. Please note, your ID Code will be different.

I can’t get the installer to accept my Keycode.

On the previous screen, it asks for the serial number. It says LIMITED. Change this to the serial number printed in your CD-sleeve.
Then when you type in your Keycode on the next screen, it will work.

The first time I launch it, it’s expired.

The network version requires immediate authorization.
Only Palisade can authorize the network version.

I have Practical Management Science, 2e, by Winston and Albright (isbn: 0534371353).
Page 28 refers to Excel Tutorials, but I cannot find them in my Start Menu. Where are they?

By default, the Tutorial file is located in the C:\ALBRIGHT folder. It is called tutorial.htm.
Simply double-click this file, or open it with your web browser.

If it is not in the Albright folder, it will be located in whichever folder you chose to install the Statpro add-in.

If it still cannot be located, it is available online at www.indiana.edu/~mgtsci/index.html

Clicking on @Risk will return a message "@Risk Launcher: could not send open Risk.xla message". Or if you click on
TopRank, you will get "the
macro
c:\DTOOLS\SYSTEM\DTOOLS.XLA

Sometimes it has to be manually started in Excel.
Open Excel by itself.
Then go to Tools... Addins. Click Browse.
Go to the C:\DTOOLS\System folder.
Double-click dtools32.xll.
This should then add dtools32 in your addin list. Be sure it has a checkmark.
Exit Excel.
Try opening one of the applications by going to Start... Programs... Decision Tools... etc.

I’ve bought a used book and cannot register my used copy of the software because the serial # has already been authorized by the previous user.

I have Win95 and my 3.1.1 of DPL won’t work

Win95 requires DPL upgrade 3.2.

Download the file called dpl_32.exe (if you have Internet Explorer, right click on the file(s), and choose "Copy to Folder")

Once downloaded, double-click the file to start the extraction and installation of the upgrade (be sure to have a blank floppy in drive A:).

INSIGHT XLA

I downloaded the demo program and it worked fine. I went ahead and bought the full version (Monte Carlo). It installed fine, but it sill limits me to 50 runs, even though it should contain 5000. It’s as if the demo is still installed, even though I deleted it.

This is caused by a couple of dll files that were installed by the demo program.
In the demo, two files were copied into your
C:\Windows\System directory, they were:

Sim5016.dll
Sim5032.dll

I would recommend searching your hard-drive for both of these files, delete them both.
Then delete sim.xla from your Excel\Library folder and also delete the Insight folder.
In other words, get rid of all of it!

Once all of this is gone, reinstall just the full program

INSIGHT XLA

We have upgraded from SIM.XLA to SIM25K.XLA. AT present we have noticed that we now have
to
manually edit all the files linked to the old SIM.XLA to SIM25K.XLA.

This is an ugly feature of all Excel add-ins. They remember the path name
with the function. When you load the file under SIM25k gen formulas will
look like =`C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT
OFFICE\ OFFICE\LIBRARY\Sim.xla`!gen_Normal (100000,20000)

With SIM25k loaded and SIM not loaded,

Use the Edit Replace command to replace

=`C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\LIBRARY\Sim.xla`! NOTE use
the exact path statement as it appears on your machine

with

=

for the entire worksheet.

Then save the workbook and all will be well.

What is the exact syntax for the gen_Discrete function?

You have to specify and array of cells, You can’t just type in the probability and value numbers.

When using What’s Best, the help file refers to some examples files that I can’t find.

What’s Best! includes example files which were considered redundant with the
examples we put in INSIGHT, so we left them out. However, you can
go to www.Lindo.com, and download the very latest version of What`sBest!

When I go to launch the SIM.XLA addin, I get:
Runtime Error 53: File Not Found: sim32.dll

Simply copy the sim16.dll file that is in your System Extension directory, and rename the copy sim32.dll.
Then place it back in the System Extensions folder.

INSIGHT XLA

I can’t get the What’s Best add-in to launch with Excel 2000.

The problem is that the older add-in can’t seem to be recognized by the auto-launcher of Excel2000.
The only way to launch the add-in is to open the file manually.
Launch Excel, and then look in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Library folder. You should see the wb.xla file.
Double-click it, say Yes to Enable Macros and the add-in should load.
The add-in wasn’t designed for Excel 2000, but we have not heard of any usage issues at this point.

I purchased the Upgrade to the Monte Carlo Simulation call SIM25k.xla.
I am having trouble with it.

This is an industrial upgrade, and therefore not supported by ITP.

JMP.IN MAC

I just received JMP In 4, which I am using on my Macintosh. The manual says that I should be able to import and export
files directly from and to Microsoft Excel.
How do I do this?

On the Macintosh, you will need to save the Excel file as a delimited text file or copy then paste the data into JMP. To import the text file into JMP:

Launch Excel and open your dataset. Go to File... Save As. For Files of Type, choose "text, tab delimited".
Launch JMPIN. Go to File... Open. Switch "Show" to "text documents". Find your .txt file.
Choose "Delimited". Hit OK.

Does JMPIN support the general estimating equations (GEE) technique?

JMPIN will not do GEE tests.

I have JMP IN 4.
When you specify the mean and standard deviation, the center line and control
limits for an S-chart are wrong. The plot of the standard deviations, however, is correct.

This issue is being looked into.
It only affects JMP IN, not JMP.

Can JMP IN 4 or higher be installed on a network server and not run locally?

No. JMP IN 4 must be installed locally on each client machine.

JMP.IN WIN

Since installation I have not been able to
classify my data as continuous data even though it is continuous data.
Only nominal and ordinal modeling type is highlighted and it will not let
me chose continuous. Therefore I can not simple things like scatterplots
etc.

Try this; Launch JMP IN. Go to file and choose open. Open "Databook" and choose the JMP file "bigclass". In the AGE column the little box above AGE should be set as "O"
Put your cursor on the "O" and hold down your mouse button. A window should open allowing you to choose "continuous". Go to analyze on the menu bar. Choose "fit y by x"
pick age as your X variable and height as your Y variable and choose ok. That should produce a scatter plot.

JMP.IN WIN

Can JMP IN 4 or higher be installed on a network server and not run locally?

No. Due to certain entries in the registry, JMP IN 4 must be installed locally on each client machine.

When I go to launch, I receive the message "failed to copy jmp.per".

Uninstall the program, and then reinstall, but choose all installation defaults. You can change the destination drive, but not the destination folder.

JMP.IN WIN

When I use the calculator function I either get an error message or my screen freezes.

The problem is related to your video card, especially 3-D accelerated cards..
Adjust your color palette to 256 colors and/or your desktop to 640x480. If it still fails, adjust your graphics accelerator to basic functions. (Start...Settings...Control Panel...Display...Settings...Advanced Properties...Performance).

You may, however, want to run the program in Safe Mode (F8 at "Starting Windows 95/98..." boot-up( so you do not have to limit the output of your video card.
Once you reboot from Safe Mode, all will be back to normal.



JMP.IN WIN

When I try to use the "check" and "$" symbols in JMPIN, they do not work.

Not all platforms have these menu items.

When I try to print a graph, I get a missing or corrupt file error. I’ve tried reinstalling both JMP IN and my printer drivers.

The following message may appear when printing JMP output to a Hewlett Packard DeskJet 500c/600c/800c or 1000c series printer:

HP DeskJet Status: Printer driver problem. Data required by the
printer driver cannot be found or has been corrupted. Restart
Windows and try printing again.
This problem is especially likely to occur when printing JMP graphics output which has vertical axis labels. The problem has been acknowledged by Hewlett Packard as a known bug in the printer drivers under Windows.

To circumvent the problem, there is a new option beginning in JMP Release 3.2 under Windows called NoRotatedText. By default, this option is set to `0`, which means that a vertical axis label will be rotated when drawn. To circumvent the printer driver error, the option should be set to `1`.

To implement the change, add the following line to your JMP.INI file in the [Preferences] section:

NoRotatedText=1

NOTE: The JMP.INI file is located in your Windows system directory
e.g. c:\Windows or c:\Windows95 or c:\Winnt.
An alternative to using the NoRotatedText option is to journal your output and save the RTF file for printing in another application or copy/paste your output into another application.

How do I import SAS files?

JMPIN has a file import feature for importing SAS Transport files. Files in this SAS transport format will have a file extension of XPT. If the files are in the XPT format you should be able to open them in JMP IN. Go to File.. Import.. SAS Transport File.

I know you can get them using the inverse correlation

In the output from a Fit Model analysis, just right-click (context click) in the parameter

There is no option for choosing anything other than a 95% confidence level in JMP. That seems to be the standard degree of measurement. It is advisable to look at your sigma's rather than be concerned with changing the confidence level.

I’m having various difficulties with printing.

The Deskjet series printer issue you have mentioned has been reported on JMP's web site. Since you have purchased a student version of a professional product, visit the web site of the professional version. Student products, in general, do not have their own web sites.

When I did a search on your issue, this is what I found:

"JMP output does not print on HP DeskJet printer series 600/800

This is an update on the Hewlett Packard DeskJet printer problem encountered by many JMP users. The problem is known to occur when trying to print JMP output to the Hewlett Packard color printer 660c, 850c, 870c series. You will receive the following error:

HP DeskJet Status: Printer driver problem. Data required by the
printer driver cannot be found or has been corrupted. Restart
Windows and try printing again.
The problem began with version 5 of the DeskJet 660c/850c driver. Upgrading to a newer driver does not fix the problem. The problem also exists with version 9.2 of the DeskJet 870Cse driver.

Hewlett Packard has acknowledged that this is a bug in their printer driver

To circumvent the problem, there is a new option beginning in JMP Release 3.2 under Windows called NoRotatedText. By default, this option is set to `0`, which means that a vertical axis label will be rotated when drawn. To circumvent the printer driver error, the option should be set to `1`.

To implement the change, add the following line to your JMP.INI file in the [Preferences] section:

NoRotatedText=1

NOTE: The JMP.INI file is located in your Windows system directory
e.g. c:\Windows or c:\Windows95 or c:\Winnt."


I’m hoping this solution will work. Since I can’t replicate your issue and this fix is for the Pro version, I can’t be certain.

Installing additional drivers for a Deskjet 500 printer, and then telling JMP IN to use those drivers.

Another solution, which also solves you not being able to print the graphs, is to use the Journal function.
When you have created the object you want to print, open the Journal function under Edit. From here you will see all the work you have done. You can then save the journal as an RTF file and then open and print it out of any Windows based word processor.
Another way to export a graph that you can see all of on the screen is to hit ALT+Print Screen and then go to a Paint program and hit Edit...Paste.

When you specify the mean and standard deviation, the center line and control
limits for an S-chart are wrong. The plot of the standard deviations, however, is correct.

This issue is being looked into.
It only affects JMP IN, not JMP.

I have two plots on a single graph.
How do I set it up so that the two plots are using separate Y variables. I want one of them plotted with a Y-axis on the left, and the other with a Y-axis on the right.

Once you have created your two plots sharing the same Y axis:
Double-click on one of the upper-most plot points (or line if you did a line graph). You will get the Line/Scatter Dialog box. In the Scale To portion of the Data to Plot, specify 2 for the Y-axis #.
Click OK.

I would like to create a cumulative frequency graph, not unlike the one
I can get from the QQ Normal graph option. But, I would like to have the
data values on the X axis and the corresponding percent values on the Y
axis--this is how I normally see these kinds of plots. I could use this
plot by changing the # of std. dev. on the X axis to their corresponding
percent values, but this seems like an unnecessary step.

I can of course, create two columns of data, one for the sorted values
and one for their corresponding percent value. However, in Matlab and
other programs I have used there are built in algorithms for this. I cannot find a corresponding solution in your manual. Is there one, or must
I do the calculations myself?

The kind of plot that the user wants to create can't be DIRECTLY created
using the S-PLUS 2000 graphical interface. He can tabulate the values
obtained from computing the cumulative density function(CDF) as he
suggests in his email message and use the desired x and y-coordinates, but
this still doesn't give him the reference line that he can get from
plotting a QQ-Normal graph. You can tell this user that we have plans to
add a `Pareto Plot` option to the next version of S-PLUS for Windows that
will have a `cumulative frequency` option that will allow him to create
this kind of plot.

Here is a Splus function that will compute the CDF-function(P(x) <= x)
and tabulate the results. This may be somewhat helpful to the user.

The Next button is grayed out on the screen where I entered my name, school and serial number. I can only click on Back. I used the Serial Number from the S-Plus Product Registration Card.

You need to add the letters (usually SE) in front of your Serial Number. These letters can be found printed on your registration card as part of your serial number.

I have received a new site license code and have experienced a problem trying to use it. I received an error saying that the password/license has expired.

Please contact site licensing to make sure you have a valid site license (1-800-423-0563 ext1)

If the license is valid, then use the site license disk and do the following:

1) Create a file called stata.exe (it does not matter what is in this file -- it can just be an empty text file) in the same directory as the stinit.exe program.

2) Type stinit stata

3) Stinit will prompt you for the codes which were sent to you and will also ask for a name and organization.

4) Rather than a name and organization you may want to put something like

LINE 1: School Name
LINE 2: School Location

5) After you input the license information, stinit.exe will create a file called stata.lic.

6) You should rename this file to wstataq.lic

This wstataq.lic file is all that you need and send to the network sites.

You can copy this license file into your StataQuest directory and everything will work.

The above procedure is for either Windows 95 or Windows 3.1 and the codes will work for StataQuest 4 for Windows 95 or Windows 3.1.

I’m having trouble installing Stataquest4 on our network as a shared application with Windows 3.1.

1) Make sure that you have the necessary site license files, as well as all the paperwork that goes along with the license (1-800-423-0563 ext3)
2) Install StataQuest on the server
3) Once the files are obtained - rename wstataq.exe to stata.exe and copy the SL files to the Stata directory
4) execute the stinit.exe file and answered the information prompted with the SL paperwork, (the paperwork has all the codes and passwords)
5) rename stata.exe back to wstataq.exe
6) The user can know set up the executable paths on the clients.

I have a shortened menu bar. Several functions are missing.

Quick fix: type sqmenu at the command line. (lower-case)

If you have a shortened menu bar showing up in StataQuest 4 from a shortcut, try this:
Double click on the shortcut icon with the right mouse button. Select properties, choose shortcut. In the target window in the target window, add a space and sqmenu. Click ok. When StataQuest is launched from the shortcut now, all menu bar items should appear. This works for Win 3.1.1 also

How do I import Excel files into StataQuest?

StataQuest's maximum file specifications are given on page 3 of the StataQuest 4 text.. (4000 data elements ) total data elements is the product of rows X columns. Page 27 contains info on inputting data through text files. Page 31 has information on dealing with spreadsheet data.
In a nutshell:
1. Create your Excel file minding the rules on page 31
2, Do a save as, saving the file in a text format (.TXT) in Excel.
3. Open the (txt)file in StataQuest.

I’m having trouble installing Stataquest4 on a network.

Here are instructions for installing Stataquest 4 for Windows 95 onto a network server.

2. Install the individual version on the server by running the from the run dialog box.

Remove it from the Tools... Addins section of Excel.
Then, delete your current solvertable. Go to Start... Find. Files and Folders. Do a search for "solvertable". Delete all instances of it.
