Practice Uses Page 3
1. A meteorologist records snowfall amounts in the last 100 snow events that occurred in a particular location. The amounts range from 0.1 to 25 inches. The mean is 2.5 inches and the standard deviation is 2.2 inches.
What evidence is there that the normal curve will be a poor approximation to the distribution of snowfall amounts at this location?
2. The histogram below displays the distribution of the left foot lengths, in centimeters, of a sample of 274 college women. The slider labeled "Bin Width" can be used to change the number of categories. Experiment a bit with the number of categories.
Do you think a normal curve model is suitable for these data?
